Module 3: Ex Vivo Applications, Nuts, and Bolts
- Featured in:
- SfN’s Optogenetics Training Series
Learn the fundamentals of ex vivo applications of optogenetic manipulations, including basic experimental design and required equipment.
Patrick Rothwell |
Stephanie Cragg |
Yevgenia Kozorovitskiy |
After reviewing the materials in Module 3, you should be able to:
- Define the type of scientific questions that can be addressed using optogenetics in ex vivo preparations, and provide examples.
- Understand proper experimental design of ex vivo optogenetic experiments.
- Compare optogenetics to alternative ex vivo methodologies.
- List key concepts in the design and interpretation of ex vivo optogenetic experiments.
- Discuss the basic setup of ex vivo optogenetic experiments.

Module 3A: Optogenetic Applications in Acute Brain Slices
In this presentation, Patrick Rothwell will cover why and when to use optogenetics in acute brain slices, also called ex vivo. Specifically, Rothwell will:
- Identify scientific questions that can be addressed using optogenetics in ex vivo preparations.
- Compare optogenetics to alternative ex vivo methodologies.
After watching this presentation, you should be able to better understand applications of optogenetic approaches in ex vivo preparations.
-
Module 3B: Nuts and Bolts of Ex Vivo Optogenetics Experiments
In this presentation, Stephanie Cragg and Yevgenia Kozorovitskiy will cover the basics of using optogenetics in acute brain slices, also called ex vivo. Specifically, they will:
- Identify key concepts in the design and interpretation of ex vivo optogenetic experiments.
- Describe critical parts and equipment for ex vivo optogenetics experiments.
After watching this presentation, you should be able to understand the basic setup and key concepts for ex vivo optogenetics experiments.

Module 3C: Supporting Resources for Ex Vivo Applications, Nuts and Bolts
The resources here were selected by Patrick Rothwell, Stephanie Craigg, and Yevgenia Kozorovitsky, faculty from Module 3 of SfN’s Optogenetics Training Series. These resources supplement their presentations, Optogenetic Applications in Acute Brain Slices and Nuts and Bolts of Ex Vivo Optogenetics Experiments.
Use these resources to better understand appropriate applications and key concepts of designing and interpreting optogenetic experiments using ex vivo preparations.
