Succeeding with Data: Practical Advice for Good Statistics and Reproducible Workflows

From the moment you start designing an experiment through your final manuscript, you have decisions to make. This webinar will help you plan and implement your statistical approach, avoid pitfalls, and generate analytics workflows for open, reproducible science. We’ll begin with an exploration of common mistakes and choices for neuroscience experiments, and end with an introduction to the use of programming to generate reproducible results. By the end, you’ll have a few more tools in your belt for succeeding with data.

Speakers

Julio J. Ramirez, PhD

Julio J. Ramirez, PhD, is the R. Stuart Dickson Professor and director of the neuroscience program at Davidson College. Ramriez earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from Fairfield University and later obtained his PhD in psychology from Clark University. After teaching at the College of St. Benedict/St. John's University, Rameriez completed his postdoctorate in neuroscience at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Ramirez's research interests include the recovery of function after central nervous system injury, with an emphasis on determining the functional significance of hippocampal neuroplasticity. At the Society for Neuroscience (SfN), Ramirez was co-director of the Neuroscience Scholars Program from 2012 to 2021 and served as a counselor and treasurer of SfN from 2015 to 2023. He is currently the chair of SfN’s Neuroscience Training Committee.

Robert Calin-Jageman, PhD

Robert Calin-Jageman, PhD, is a professor of psychology and neuroscience program director at Dominican University. He received his bachelor's degree in philosophy from Albion College, a PhD in physiological psychology from Wayne State University, and his postdoctoral fellowship in neurobiology at Georgia State University in the lab of Paul S. Katz. Calin-Jageman's research lab studies the neurobiology of learning and memory, using sensitization in Aplysia as our model system. He also develops open-source tools for statistical analysis and neuroscience education.

Ashley Juavinett, PhD

Ashley Juavinett, PhD, is an associate teaching professor in the neurobiology department at UC San Diego. Juavinett earned her PhD in neuroscience at UC San Diego in 2016 and completed her postdoctoral work at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. She became a teaching professor in Neurobiology at UC San Diego in 2018.Juavinett’s research and writing focuses broadly on education and careers in the field of neuroscience, with a focus on best practices for introducing biology students to programming. The goal of her work is to understand how these approaches create realistic and engaging research experiences in the classroom, encourage students to persist in computational work, and ultimately retain a broad array of students in neuroscience. Juavinett is the author of the book, So You Want to Be a Neuroscientist? and a columnist at The Transmitter.

Can I ask the presenters questions? Yes! You can submit any questions before the webinar through the registration form. During the webinar, you can submit questions through the Q&A box.
