Join this interactive session asElly Nedivi and Josiah Boivin discuss their paper, “Cortical Somatostatin Innervation Follows a Unique Experience-Independent Developmental Trajectory”, with JNeurosci Reviewing Editor Serena Dudek. Attendees can submit questions at registration and live during the webinar.
Below is the significance statement of the paper published Feb. 11, 2026, in JNeurosci andauthored by Josiah R. Boivin, Bettina Schmerl, Kendyll B. Martin, Chia-Fang Lee, and Elly Nedivi.
During development, neurons form extensive synaptic connections while maintaining a delicate balance of excitation and inhibition. It is critical to understand how different subpopulations of synapses form during development, because perturbations in this precisely coordinated process can cause neurodevelopmental disorders. Here, we reveal at unprecedented resolution the development of cortical inhibitory innervation from somatostatin-expressing neurons, which canonically target dendrites. We show that somatostatin neurons follow different rules than other cell types during development, and somatostatin innervation is well timed to contribute to developmental processes that are central to healthy cortical function. Our results provide new insights on how somatostatin neurons, a critically influential cell type, integrate into cortical circuitry during development.
