Connectomes: Neural Networks and How They Change in Psychiatric Disorders and Addictions

This webinar will discuss connectomes in relation to neural networks relevant for psychiatric disorders and addictions. Moderator and speaker Nuno Sousa (University of Minho) will join speakers Dara Cannon (University of Galway) and Bratislav Misic (McGill University) to explain connections between neural processes affected by stress and their implications on neuropsychiatric disorders, with a focus on techniques such as brain imaging. Further, speakers will discuss interactions between brain areas that lead to cognitive and behavioral functions.

Speakers

Nuno Sousa, MD, PhD

Nuno Sousa, MD, PhD, is a full professor at the School of Medicine, University of Minho. He is a visiting professor at Upstate Medical University in New York. He serves at several medical education and medical assessment advisory boards (NBME, EuroBMA). His main research interests are focused on the establishment of functional and structural correlations mediated by stress and its implications in neuropsychiatric disorders. He earned his MD and PhD at Porto Medical School.

Dara Cannon, PhD

Dara Cannon, PhD, is a professor of neuroscience at the University of Galway on the west coast of Ireland. Cannon’s research laboratory focuses on the biological underpinnings of psychiatric disorders including analyses using brain imaging, genetic, cognitive, and life context with a teaching focus on gross anatomical and magnetic resonance imaging-based neuroanatomy and neuroimaging.

Bratislav Misic, PhD

Bratislav Misic, PhD, is an associate professor at the Montreal Neurological Institute at McGill University. He completed his undergraduate degree in neuroscience and mathematics at the University of Toronto. He trained with Randy McIntosh at the University of Toronto (PhD) and with Olaf Sporns at Indiana University (postdoc). At the Montreal Neurological Institute, he leads the Network Neuroscience Lab (https://netneurolab.github.io). He studies how global dynamics, cognitive operations, and complex behavior emerge from the connections and interactions among distributed brain areas. He uses multimodal neuroimaging (MRI, M/EEG, PET) to map and model patterns of neural connectivity. His group pursues several research themes, from modeling communication processes on anatomical networks, to statistical models of network architecture and disease propagation.
