Join Program Committee Chair Laura Colgin, Program Committee Member India Morrison, and Trainee Advisory Committee Member J. Alex Grizzell as they discuss how to put together an impactful abstract for Neuroscience 2024, which will be held in Chicago on October 5 – 9. During this webinar, you will learn some insightful tips on submitting your abstract, and the presenters will be available to answer any questions you may have.
Q & A from How to Submit an Impactful Abstract for Neuroscience 2024
Q: If I have submitted an abstract and keep generating data, is it ok to change components of the abstract and the poster?
A: Answered Live
Q: Is it mandatory to be a member of the society to upload an abstract?
A: Yes. Only SfN members are eligible to submit abstracts for Neuroscience 2024. The Affiliate membership type may not be used to submit abstracts.
Q: What aspect of neuroscience must the abstract be based on? Can it include nonclinical areas such as machine learning?
A: Answered Live
Q: Will the mechanics of preparing the physical abstract be discussed, for those of us who are not institutionally based?
A: Our webinar on how to put together an abstract can be found here: https://neuronline.sfn.org/scientific-research/how-to-put-together-an-abstract-sfn24, and you can register for our webinar in the fall on putting together a poster https://neuronline.sfn.org/professional-development/how-to-make-and-present-a-poster-for-neuroscience-2024/
Q: Can an abstract’s studies focus on rare neurodegenerative diseases be submitted to SFN 2024?
A: Answered Live
Q: I’m a neuroscientist and I would like to know how to get the best chance to buster my work since I work on behavioral neuroscience specifically emotional decoding but with a translational aim on robotics to teach robots how to comprehend emotions and interact emphatically with humans so I’m always in the midway between engineering and neuroscience. I would like to fit in the best way to this important event.

Q: Does the committee prefer posters submitted along with figures or tables?
A: Answered Live
Q: Sorry for ask again, but referred to the ISM Abstract Slots for the SfN Annual Meeting, they request not to be a member of SfN to apply, how can I submit an abstract if I’m not a member
A: If you do not yet have an ISM code, please contact your regional administrator for access and instructions. SfN does not distribute ISM codes.
Q: Can we include figures in the abstract? Does that change the total word count?
A: Images may be included with abstract submission. Each image included reduces the character count by 500 characters. The body of the abstract should be no more than 2300 characters, including punctuation but not spaces.
Q: Can a proposal for a gathering aimed at promoting neuroscience education and research be submitted to SFN 2024 conference? (under the category of social-educational entrepreneurship?)
A: It sounds like your abstract falls under Theme J: https://www.sfn.org/meetings/neuroscience-2024/call-for-abstracts/themes-and-topics#theme-j
Q: Is it OK to send an abstract of a work that has just been published? To promote the findings and/or discuss it?
A: Answered Live
Q: Should keywords be included in the abstract?
A: Keywords should not be included in the abstract body. There is a separate step in the abstract submission process specifically to enter keywords.
Q: In the guidelines, it states that all co-authors need to have a free my-SfN membership. Do they need to have this completed before we submit our abstract? Or is it fine if this is just done prior to presenting at the conference?
A: All co-authors are required to have a free My SfN account to be added to an abstract. However, you can still submit and finalize your abstract without your co-authors added. You will have the opportunity to add or edit your co-authors after submission. Your submitted abstract must be finalized (e.g. paid for and all required fields completed) by the deadline of Tuesday, May 7, 5 p.m. EDT. You may make changes to your finalized abstract by unlocking your submission until the editing deadline of Thursday, May 9, 2 p.m. EDT. No abstract edits will be accepted after the abstract editing deadline.
Q: Is there a specific category for submitting systematic reviews and meta-analyses, or should they be submitted inside their area of interest?
A: Answered Live
Q: Are systematic reviews acceptable?
A: Answered Live
Q: At what stage of my research do you suggest I apply for Neuroscience?
A: Answered Live
Q: Are you familiar with the TPDA-program? If yes, how are the chances of getting financial support for presenting my own research?
A: The TPDA process is competitive, but we recommend reaching out to tpda@sfn.org for more information.
Q: What is the difference between a membership and a sponsor?
A: You must be an SfN member to submit an abstract. However, the submitting author may indicate a different author on the block as the presenting author; that presenting author does not need to be an SfN member.
Q: If I had an active membership and let it expire, do I have to ask for sponsorship again?
A: Please reach out to membership@sfn.org for help with this question.
Q: How much elaboration of method and result section must the abstract contain?
A: Answered Live
Q: Is SfN membership free?
A: Membership fees are based on your career stage: https://www.sfn.org/membership/membership-fees, and discounted for individuals from developing countries: https://www.sfn.org/membership/membership-fees/information-for-members-in-developing-countries
Q: I completed a post-doc in science and policy and hold a PhD in neuroscience. Can I submit an abstract as an entrepreneur, rather than from an academic standpoint? Is an academic affiliation required for this submission?
A: Academic affiliation is not required, but abstracts deemed to contain advertisements may be rejected. Visit the rules for abstract submission for details. https://www.sfn.org/meetings/neuroscience-2024/call-for-abstracts/rules-for-abstract-submissions
