In clinical practice, the concept of resilience is a well-known and widely-used term. It is related to this set of coping skills and strategies for day-to-day life. However, I believe it is sometimes easy to confuse behavioral adaptations with resilience. In stress research, it is well documented that immobilization and freezing can appear as if the animal is doing nothing or is resilient. But the reality is that the subject is experiencing an extreme response from the sympathetic nervous system that produces this behavior. In other words, the stress is in the cognitive systems, but in the environment, the subject is doing nothing. I believe that we need to discuss many of these clinical concepts in a translational way to generate more evidence from a range of approaches.
