Discover how SfN Chapters connect neuroscientists across communities worldwide. Led by Chapter leaders, this webinar will introduce SfN Chapters, including how to get started and manage a chapter, as well as the many ways they support networking, community outreach, and engagement.
Whether new to SfN, looking to expand a local network, or interested in becoming more involved in the neuroscience community, participants will learn what Chapters do, the benefits of getting involved, and how to connect with a Chapter nearby.
Q&A Session from "Get Connected Locally: An Introduction to SfN Chapters"
Interested in connecting with your local neuroscience community? Find an SfN chapter in your area, or learn how to start a new chapter or reactivate an existing one. These resources provide the information you need to get involved in and build connections with neuroscientists in your community.

Q: Does SfN support or encourage interdisciplinary programming that connects neuroscience with the arts, creativity, music, dance, visual art, theater, or other creative practices—specifically the Neuroarts Blueprint Initiative at Johns Hopkins?
A: [Jayalakshmi Viswanathan, PhD] I am personally very interested in Neuroarts, and I am also a children’s neuroscience book author and illustrator. Chapters have a reasonable amount of flexibility in developing programming at the local level, and I would be happy to discuss this further. SfN has been very supportive of Neuroarts programming. It supports the Neuroarts booths at the annual meeting, and Neuronline has published several related articles and resources—including a few that I authored—on organizing local neuroscience and art events.
Q: Malaysia has few SfN members. Can the 10 Regular or Emeritus member signatories be from nearby countries, such as Singapore? Has SfN made exceptions for regions with low membership?
A: [SfN Chapters] Yes, non-local members may serve as signatories. We can also review your situation individually. Please note that there is an existing chapter in Kelantan, Malaysia. The chapter has a website and an email address you can use to contact its members if you decide to create your own chapter and would like to collaborate with them.
Q: Can an undergraduate or pre-university student serve as the founding chapter representative? Do I need a faculty advisor?
A: [Sergiy Yakovenko, PhD] Yes, student members can initiate a chapter. However, the petition still requires signatures from 10 current Regular or Emeritus SfN members. Student signatures do not satisfy this requirement. A faculty advisor is not required, but having one may be helpful.
Q: Would it be acceptable to begin as an affiliate of the Kelantan Chapter rather than establish a separate chapter? Is there a precedent for that?
A: [Sergiy Yakovenko, PhD] You may contact the Kelantan Chapter to explore opportunities for collaboration. However, SfN does not formally recognize satellite chapters.
Q: Does an affiliate or satellite need its own petition and signatories, or would it operate under the Kelantan Chapter’s charter?
A: [SfN Chapters] SfN does not formally recognize satellite chapters. To become an official SfN chapter, your group would need to establish its own chapter, adopt its own bylaws, and submit the required petition signatures.
Q: Can a chapter be based at one university, such as Monash University Malaysia, or must it serve a broader region?
A: [SfN Chapters] We discourage chapters from being affiliated exclusively with one university because individuals outside the university may feel discouraged from participating. A university may serve as the chapter home base, but we encourage the chapter to expand its reach and welcome participation from the broader region.
