    Learning to Choose: Behavioral Dynamics Underlying the Initial Acquisition of Decision-Making | eNeuro
    Current theories of decision-making propose that decisions arise through competition between choice options. Computational models of the decision process estimate how quickly information about choice options is integrated and how much information is needed to trigger a choice. Experiments using this approach typically report data from well-trained participants. As such, we do not know how the decision process evolves as a decision-making task is learned for the first time. To address this gap, we used a behavioral design separating learning the value of choice options from learning to make choices. We trained male rats to respond to single visual stimuli with different reward values. Then, we trained them to make choices between pairs of stimuli. Initially, the rats responded more slowly when presented with choices. However, as they gained experience in making choices, this slowing reduced.     A Retrospective Analysis of Career Outcomes in Neuroscience | eNeuro
    What factors are associated with career outcomes among biomedical PhDs? Research to date has focused on drivers of interest in (and intention to pursue) various careers, especially during graduate school, but fewer studies have investigated participants’ ultimate career outcomes. Even less is known about what factors matter for groups historically underrepresented in the US science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce, such as women, some racial and ethnic groups, and persons with disabilities ( [National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES), 2021a][1]). This study reports a new analysis of data from 781 PhD neuroscientists that were obtained from a retrospective survey ( [Ullrich et al., 2021][2]) to investigate the factors that influence the career sector in which neuroscience PhDs are employed and whether there were group differences according to social identity.     The Impact of Spectral and Temporal Degradation on Vocoded Speech Recognition in Early-Blind Individuals | eNeuro
    This study compared the impact of spectral and temporal degradation on vocoded speech recognition between early-blind and sighted subjects. The participants included 25 early-blind subjects (30.32 ± 4.88 years; male:female, 14:11) and 25 age- and sex-matched sighted subjects. Tests included monosyllable recognition in noise at various signal-to-noise ratios (−18 to −4 dB), matrix sentence-in-noise recognition, and vocoded speech recognition with different numbers of channels (4, 8, 16, and 32) and temporal envelope cutoff frequencies (50 vs 500 Hz). Cortical-evoked potentials (N2 and P3b) were measured in response to spectrally and temporally degraded stimuli. The early-blind subjects displayed superior monosyllable and sentence recognition than sighted subjects (all p  < 0.01).     Asymmetric Activation of ON and OFF Pathways in the Degenerated Retina | eNeuro
    Retinal prosthetics are one of the leading therapeutic strategies to restore lost vision in patients with retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration. Much work has described patterns of spiking in retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) in response to electrical stimulation, but less work has examined the underlying retinal circuitry that is activated by electrical stimulation to drive these responses. Surprisingly, little is known about the role of inhibition in generating electrical responses or how inhibition might be altered during degeneration. Using whole-cell voltage–clamp recordings during subretinal electrical stimulation in the rd10 and wild-type ( wt ) retina, we found electrically evoked synaptic inputs differed between ON and OFF RGC populations, with ON cells receiving mostly excitation and OFF cells receiving mostly inhibition and very little excitation.     Functional Recovery Associated with Dendrite Regeneration in PVD Neuron of Caenorhabditis elegans | eNeuro
    PVD neuron of Caenorhabditis elegans is a highly polarized cell with well-defined axonal, and dendritic compartments. PVD neuron operates in multiple sensory modalities including the control of both nociceptive touch sensation and body posture. Although both the axon and dendrites of this neuron show a regeneration response following laser-assisted injury, it is rather unclear how the behavior associated with this neuron is affected by the loss of these structures. It is also unclear whether neurite regrowth would lead to functional restoration in these neurons. Upon axotomy, using a femtosecond laser, we saw that harsh touch response was specifically affected leaving the body posture unperturbed. Subsequently, recovery in the touch response is highly correlated to the axon regrowth, which was dependent on DLK-1/MLK-1 MAP Kinase.     Basal Forebrain Cholinergic Neurons Have Specific Characteristics during the Perinatal Period | eNeuro
    Cholinergic neurons of the basal forebrain represent the main source of cholinergic innervation of large parts of the neocortex and are involved in adults in the modulation of attention, memory, and arousal. During the first postnatal days, they play a crucial role in the development of cortical neurons and cortical cytoarchitecture. However, their characteristics, during this period have not been studied. To understand how they can fulfill this role, we investigated the morphological and electrophysiological maturation of cholinergic neurons of the substantia innominata–nucleus basalis of Meynert (SI/NBM) complex in the perinatal period in mice.     Paradoxical Boosting of Weak and Strong Spatial Memories by Hippocampal Dopamine Uncaging | eNeuro
    The ability to remember changes in the surroundings is fundamental for daily life. It has been proposed that novel events producing dopamine release in the hippocampal CA1 region could modulate spatial memory formation. However, the role of hippocampal dopamine increase on weak or strong spatial memories remains unclear. We show that male mice exploring two objects located in a familiar environment for 5 min created a short-term memory (weak) that cannot be retrieved 1 d later, whereas 10 min exploration created a long-term memory (strong) that can be retrieved 1 d later. Remarkably, hippocampal dopamine elevation during the encoding of weak object location memories (OLMs) allowed their retrieval 1 d later but dopamine elevation during the encoding of strong OLMs promoted the preference for a familiar object location over a novel object location after 24 h.     Phase Delays between Mouse Globus Pallidus Neurons Entrained by Common Oscillatory Drive Arise from Their Intrinsic Properties, Not Their Coupling | eNeuro
    A hallmark of Parkinson's disease is the appearance of correlated oscillatory discharge throughout the cortico-basal ganglia (BG) circuits. In the primate globus pallidus (GP), where the discharge of GP neurons is normally uncorrelated, pairs of GP neurons exhibit oscillatory spike correlations with a broad distribution of pairwise phase delays in experimental parkinsonism. The transition to oscillatory correlations is thought to indicate the collapse of the normally segregated information channels traversing the BG. The large phase delays are thought to reflect pathological changes in synaptic connectivity in the BG.     Conditioning Conformity: A Neuroscientific Funding and Publishing Paradox | eNeuro
    Why does groundbreaking progress in our understanding of the brain seem scarce (at least to me)? The prevailing system of research funding and publication, deeply rooted in peer review and contingent upon preliminary data, tends to favor safe, conventional ideas, thereby impeding major breakthroughs. The prerequisite of preliminary data for hypothesis validation transforms grant-seeking into a cycle that prioritizes data accumulation over pioneering ideas, fostering publications that align with pre-established notions endorsed by reviewers.     Auditory Encoding of Natural Speech at Subcortical and Cortical Levels Is Not Indicative of Cognitive Decline | eNeuro
    More and more patients worldwide are diagnosed with dementia, which emphasizes the urgent need for early detection markers. In this study, we built on the auditory hypersensitivity theory of a previous study—which postulated that responses to auditory input in the subcortex as well as cortex are enhanced in cognitive decline—and examined auditory encoding of natural continuous speech at both neural levels for its indicative potential for cognitive decline. We recruited study participants aged 60 years and older, who were divided into two groups based on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, one group with low scores ( n  = 19, participants with signs of cognitive decline) and a control group ( n  = 25).
