    Sepsis-Induced Changes in Spectral Segregation and Kinetics of Hippocampal Oscillatory States in Rats | eNeuro
    Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is a frequent severe complication of sepsis and the systemic inflammatory response syndrome, associated with high mortality and long-term neurologic consequences in surviving patients. One of the main clinical signs of SAE are discontinuous sleep periods that are fragmented by frequent awakenings. Although this brain state fragmentation strongly impacts the functionality of the nervous and other systems, its underlying network mechanisms are still poorly understood. In this work, we therefore aim to characterize the properties and dynamics of brain oscillatory states in response to SAE in an acute rat model of sepsis induced by high-dose lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 10 mg/kg).     Attention without Constraint: Alpha Lateralization in Uncued Willed Attention | eNeuro
    Studies of voluntary visual spatial attention have used attention-directing cues, such as arrows, to induce or instruct observers to focus selective attention on relevant locations in visual space to detect or discriminate subsequent target stimuli. In everyday vision, however, voluntary attention is influenced by a host of factors, most of which are quite different from the laboratory paradigms that use attention-directing cues. These factors include priming, experience, reward, meaning, motivations, and high-level behavioral goals. Attention that is endogenously directed in the absence of external attention-directing cues has been referred to as “self-initiated attention” or, as in our prior work, as “willed attention” where volunteers decide where to attend in response to a prompt to do so.     Differential Development of Dendritic Spines in Striatal Projection Neurons of Direct and Indirect Pathways in the Caudoputamen and Nucleus Accumbens | eNeuro
    Synaptic modification in postnatal development is essential for the maturation of neural networks. Developmental maturation of excitatory synapses occurs at the loci of dendritic spines that are dynamically regulated by growth and pruning. Striatal spiny projection neurons (SPNs) receive excitatory input from the cerebral cortex and thalamus. SPNs of the striatonigral direct pathway (dSPNs) and SPNs of the striatopallidal indirect pathway (iSPNs) have different developmental roots and functions. The spatial and temporal dynamics of dendritic spine maturation of these two types of SPNs remain elusive. Here, we delineate the developmental trajectories of dendritic spines of dSPNs and iSPNs in the caudoputamen and nucleus accumbens (NAc).     Target-distractor competition modulates saccade trajectories in space and object-space | eNeuro
    Saccade planning and execution can be affected by a multitude of factors present in a target selection task. Recent studies have shown that the similarity between a target and nearby distractors affects the curvature of saccade trajectories, due to target-distractor competition. To further understand the nature of this competition, we varied the distance between and the similarity of complex target and distractor objects in a delayed match-to-sample task to examine their effects on human saccade trajectories and better understand the underlying neural circuitry. For trials with short saccadic reaction times (SRTs) when target-distractor competition is still active, the distractor is attractive and saccade trajectories are deviated towards the distractor.     Strawberry Additive Increases Nicotine Vapor Sampling and Systemic Exposure But Does Not Enhance Pavlovian-Based Nicotine Reward in Mice | eNeuro
    Nicotine is an addictive drug whose popularity has recently increased, particularly among adolescents, because of the availability of electronic nicotine devices (i.e., “vaping”) and nicotine e-liquids containing additives with rich chemosensory properties. Some efforts to understand the role of these additives in nicotine reward suggest that they increase nicotine reward and reinforcement, but the sensory contributions of additives, especially in their vapor forms, are largely untested. Here, to better understand how a fruit-flavored (i.e., strawberry) additive influences nicotine reward and aversion, we used a conditioned place preference (CPP) procedure in which nicotine and a strawberry additive were delivered as a vapor to male and female adolescent mice. We found that nicotine vapor alone can lead to a dose-dependent CPP when using a biased design.     Neuronal Representation of a Working Memory-Based Decision Strategy in the Motor and Prefrontal Cortico-Basal Ganglia Loops | eNeuro
    While animal and human decision strategies are typically explained by model-free and model-based reinforcement learning (RL), their choice sequences often follow simple procedures based on working memory (WM) of past actions and rewards. Here, we address how working memory-based choice strategies, such as win-stay-lose-switch (WSLS), are represented in the prefrontal and motor cortico-basal ganglia loops by simultaneous recording of neuronal activities in the dorsomedial striatum (DMS), the dorsolateral striatum (DLS), the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), and the primary motor cortex (M1).     A Comprehensive, Affordable, Open-Source Hardware-Software Solution for Flexible Implementation of Complex Behaviors in Head-Fixed Mice | eNeuro
    Experiments that take advantage of head-fixed behavioral tasks have been a staple of systems neuroscience research for half a century. More recently, rodents came to the forefront of these efforts, primarily because of the rich experimental possibilities afforded by modern genetic tools. There is, however, a considerable barrier to entering this field, requiring expertise in engineering, hardware and software development, and significant time and financial commitment. Here, we present a comprehensive, open-source hardware and software solution to implement a head-fixed environment for rodent behaviors (HERBs). Our solution provides access to three frequently used experimental frameworks (two-alternative forced choice, Go-NoGo, or passive sensory stimulus presentation) in a single package.     The Nature and Origin of Synaptic Inputs to Vestibulospinal Neurons in the Larval Zebrafish | eNeuro
    Vestibulospinal neurons integrate sensed imbalance to regulate postural reflexes. As an evolutionarily conserved neural population, understanding their synaptic and circuit-level properties can offer insight into vertebrate antigravity reflexes. Motivated by recent work, we set out to verify and extend the characterization of vestibulospinal neurons in the larval zebrafish. Using current-clamp recordings together with stimulation, we observed that larval zebrafish vestibulospinal neurons are silent at rest, yet capable of sustained spiking following depolarization. Neurons responded systematically to a vestibular stimulus (translation in the dark); responses were abolished after chronic or acute loss of the utricular otolith. Voltage-clamp recordings at rest revealed strong excitatory inputs with a characteristic multimodal distribution of amplitudes, as well as strong inhibitory inputs.     Low-Dose Ketamine-Induced Deficits in Arbitrary Visuomotor Mapping in Monkeys | eNeuro
    Ketamine, an NMDA antagonist, is widely used in clinical settings. Recently, low-dose ketamine has gained attention because of its promising role as a rapid antidepressant. However, the effects of low-dose ketamine on brain function, particularly higher cognitive functions of primate brains, are not fully understood. In this study, we used two macaques as subjects and found that acute low-dose ketamine administration significantly impaired the ability for arbitrary visuomotor mapping (AVM), a form of associative learning (AL) essential for flexible behaviors, including executions of learned stimuli-response contingency or learning of new contingencies.
