    Interoception primes emotional processing: Multimodal evidence from neurodegeneration | Journal of Neuroscience
    Recent frameworks in cognitive neuroscience and behavioral neurology underscore interoceptive priors as core modulators of negative emotions. However, the field lacks experimental designs manipulating the priming of emotions via interoception and exploring their multimodal signatures in neurodegenerative models. Here, we designed a novel task that involves interoceptive and control-exteroceptive priming conditions followed by post-Intero and post-Extero facial emotion recognition (FER). We recruited 114 participants, including healthy controls (HCs) as well as patients with behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), and Alzheimer’s disease (AD).     Human Sensory Cortex Contributes to the Long-Term Storage of Aversive Conditioning | Journal of Neuroscience
    Growing animal data evince a critical role of the sensory cortex in the long-term storage of aversive conditioning, following acquisition and consolidation in the amygdala. Whether and how this function is conserved in the human sensory cortex is nonetheless unclear. We interrogated this question in a human aversive conditioning study using multidimensional assessments of conditioning and long-term (15 d) retention. Conditioned stimuli (CSs; Gabor patches) were calibrated to differentially activate the parvocellular (P) and magnocellular (M) visual pathways, further elucidating cortical versus subcortical mechanisms.     Increased Hippocampal Excitability and Altered Learning Dynamics Mediate Cognitive Mapping Deficits in Human Aging | Journal of Neuroscience
    Learning the spatial layout of a novel environment is associated with dynamic activity changes in the hippocampus and in medial parietal areas. With advancing age, the ability to learn spatial environments deteriorates substantially but the underlying neural mechanisms are not well understood. Here, we report findings from a behavioral and a fMRI experiment where healthy human older and younger adults of either sex performed a spatial learning task in a photorealistic virtual environment (VE). We modeled individual learning states using a Bayesian state-space model and found that activity in retrosplenial cortex (RSC)/parieto-occipital sulcus (POS) and anterior hippocampus did not change systematically as a function learning in older compared with younger adults across repeated episodes in the environment.     Variable Statistical Structure of Neuronal Spike Trains in Monkey Superior Colliculus | Journal of Neuroscience
    Popular models of decision-making propose that noisy sensory evidence accumulates until reaching a bound. Behavioral evidence as well as trial-averaged ramping of neuronal activity in sensorimotor regions of the brain support this idea. However, averaging activity across trials can mask other processes, such as rapid shifts in decision commitment, calling into question the hypothesis that evidence accumulation is encoded by delay period activity of individual neurons. We mined two sets of data from experiments in four monkeys in which we recorded from superior colliculus neurons during two different decision-making tasks and a delayed saccade task.     The WD40-Repeat Protein WDR-20 and the Deubiquitinating Enzyme USP-46 Promote Cell Surface Levels of Glutamate Receptors | Journal of Neuroscience
    Reversible modification of AMPA receptors (AMPARs) with ubiquitin regulates receptor levels at synapses and controls synaptic strength. The conserved deubiquitinating enzyme (DUB) ubiquitin-specific protease-46 (USP-46) removes ubiquitin from AMPARs and protects them from degradation in both Caenorhabditis elegans and mammals. Although DUBs are critical for diverse physiological processes, the mechanisms that regulate DUBs, especially in the nervous system, are not well understood. We and others previously showed that the WD40-repeat proteins WDR-48 and WDR-20 bind to and stimulate the catalytic activity of USP-46.     Changes in Presynaptic Gene Expression during Homeostatic Compensation at a Central Synapse | Journal of Neuroscience
    Homeostatic matching of pre- and postsynaptic function has been observed in many species and neural structures, but whether transcriptional changes contribute to this form of trans-synaptic coordination remains unknown. To identify genes whose expression is altered in presynaptic neurons as a result of perturbing postsynaptic excitability, we applied a transcriptomics-friendly, temperature-inducible Kir2.1-based activity clamp at the first synaptic relay of the Drosophila olfactory system, a central synapse known to exhibit trans-synaptic homeostatic matching. Twelve hours after adult-onset suppression of activity in postsynaptic antennal lobe projection neurons of males and females, we detected changes in the expression of many genes in the third antennal segment, which houses the somata of presynaptic olfactory receptor neurons.     Spatially Guided Distractor Suppression during Visual Search | Journal of Neuroscience
    Past work has demonstrated that active suppression of salient distractors is a critical part of visual selection. Evidence for goal-driven suppression includes below-baseline visual encoding at the position of salient distractors ([Gaspelin and Luck, 2018][1]) and neural signals such as the distractor positivity (Pd) that track how many distractors are presented in a given hemifield ([Feldmann-Wüstefeld and Vogel, 2019][2]). One basic question regarding distractor suppression is whether it is inherently spatial or nonspatial in character. Indeed, past work has shown that distractors evoke both spatial ([Theeuwes, 1992][3]) and nonspatial forms of interference ([Folk and Remington, 1998][4]), motivating a direct examination of whether space is integral to goal-driven distractor suppression.     Visuo-Motor Feedback Modulates Neural Activities in the Medulla of the Honeybee, Apis mellifera | Journal of Neuroscience
    Behavioral and internal-state modulation of sensory processing has been described in several organisms. In insects, visual neurons in the optic lobe are modulated by locomotion, but the degree to which visual–motor feedback modulates these neurons remains unclear. Moreover, it also remains unknown whether self-generated and externally generated visual motion are processed differently. Here, we implemented a virtual reality system that allowed fine-scale control over visual stimulation in relation to animal motion, in combination with multichannel recording of neural activity in the medulla of a female honeybee ( Apis mellifera ). We found that this activity was modulated by locomotion, although, in most cases, only when the bee had behavioral control over the visual stimulus (i.e., in a closed-loop system).     The Myelin Content of the Human Precentral Hand Knob Reflects Interindividual Differences in Manual Motor Control at the Physiological and Behavioral Level | Journal of Neuroscience
    The primary motor cortex hand area (M1HAND) and adjacent dorsal premotor cortex (PMd) form the so-called motor hand knob in the precentral gyrus. M1HAND and PMd are critical for dexterous hand use and are densely interconnected via corticocortical axons, lacking a sharp demarcating border. In 24 young right-handed volunteers, we performed multimodal mapping to delineate the relationship between structure and function in the right motor hand knob. Quantitative structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 3 tesla yielded regional R1 maps as a proxy of cortical myelin content. Participants also underwent functional MRI (fMRI).
